🏈Superbowl and 7 layer dip

If you are reading this from the United States, you might know what the hype about the upcoming Big Game is! If you are joining us from elsewhere, please still stay for the food and this 7 layer dip recipe. Because everyone’s going to love it.
We love to make this along with my avocado cottage cheese dip. A lot! But seriously, a football game or not, this easy 7 layer dip is delicious.
✨Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Ready in 15 Minutes – Perfect for last-minute entertaining or when you're short on time.
- Individual Portions = No Double Dipping – Serving in clear cups gives everyone their own personal dip, eliminating the awkward double-dipping situation at parties.
- Customizable to Your Taste – Every layer can be adjusted for heat level, dietary needs, or personal preferences. Make it mild for kids or spicy for adults—or make both versions.
- Make-Ahead Friendly – Assemble up to 4 hours before serving and refrigerate. The flavors actually improve as they meld together slightly.
- Crowd-Pleasing Classic – This is the appetizer everyone expects and loves at Super Bowl parties, potlucks, and cookouts. It's familiar comfort food that appeals to almost everyone.
- Easily Scalable – Double or triple the recipe effortlessly for larger crowds. The ratios stay the same whether making 5 cups or 30.
- Fresh & Flavorful – Unlike many party dips that are heavy and one-note, this offers bright, fresh flavors from the guacamole, pico de gallo, and cilantro.
- Works with Healthier Options – Serve with veggie sticks (bell peppers, carrots, celery) instead of chips for a lighter version without losing any flavor.
📋Ingredients
Here are the 7 layers
- Refried Beans - warmed up and seasoned with your favorite taco seasoning. I like to loosen it up with a little bit of vegetable broth while its heating.
- Guacamole - has to be homemade. No compromise here. Keep it simple if you want or use your favorite mix-ins.
- Salsa - definitely the tops shelf stuff or make your own! I have a blender salsa recipe that I will get around to sharing sometime
- Sour cream - a thick layer and I love to use full fat sour cream in this recipe
- Pico de gallo - adding double oomph along with that salsa
- Black olives - sliced olives work best here
- Cheese - good quality shredded cheddar. Need some kick - go wild and add pepperjack instead!
Bonus layer - Cilantro. Don't forget to check out the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients along with the quantities.

👩🍳Steps to make 7 layer dip
Prepare the Components
Step 1: Season the refried beans Empty the can of refried beans into a microwave-safe bowl. Stir in 1-2 teaspoons taco seasoning. If beans are very thick, add 2-3 tablespoons vegetable broth to loosen them to a spreadable consistency. Microwave for 1-2 minutes until warm and easier to spread. Let cool for 5 minutes. (Alternatively, use cold beans straight from the can—they'll just be slightly harder to spread.)
Step 2: Prepare fresh components If making homemade guacamole or pico de gallo, prepare these first and set aside. If using store-bought, open containers and have ready. Shred cheese if using a block. Drain black olives thoroughly. Chop cilantro if using.
Assemble Individual Servings (Recommended Method)
Take clear cups and layer the ingredients starting from 1 through 7. Serve with tortilla chips!! Alternatively you can layer the ingredients in a platter or a clear dish.
Chill and Serve
Cover individual cups with plastic wrap or the platter with foil. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 4 hours) before serving. Serve chilled with tortilla chips on the side. For individual cups, stick 2-3 chips into each cup for easy eating.
Pro tip: If making more than 2 hours ahead, wait to add guacamole and cilantro until closer to serving time to prevent browning.

🕒Storage Instructions
Refrigerator: Store assembled 7 layer dip covered tightly in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. After day 2, the layers begin to muddle together and fresh components (especially guacamole and pico) lose their vibrant flavor and texture.
Best Served Within: For optimal freshness and distinct layers, serve within 4-6 hours of assembling.

🍽️Serving Suggestions
- Classic Pairing: Serve with sturdy tortilla chips that won't break when scooping thick layers.
- Healthier Options: Baby carrots, bell pepper strips (red, yellow, orange), cucumber rounds, celery sticks, jicama sticks.
- Game Day Spread: Serve alongside wings, nachos, sliders, and other finger foods.
💡Vaishali's Tips for Perfect 7 Layer Dip
- Use High-Quality Ingredients: Since this recipe is so simple, ingredient quality makes a huge difference. Splurge on good salsa, fresh avocados, and quality cheese.
- Layer Order Matters: The specific order prevents watery ingredients from making everything soggy. Beans on bottom provide stable base, sour cream acts as barrier between wet and dry ingredients.
- Make Guacamole Last: Avocado browns quickly. If making ahead, prepare guacamole last and press plastic wrap directly on surface until ready to layer.
