The classic pub favorite, Peanut Masala, gets a tasty makeover with the addition of barbecue sauce. Crunchy peanuts are combined with a classic chaat recipe to make this Barbecue Peanut Masala.
Peanut Masala
This Barbecue Peanut Masala is my play on a standard pub snack that has its roots in British Indian times. If you visit any classic or old fashioned pub or bar in India, chances are that you will find peanut masala listed on the menu. A great snack to munch on while you enjoy a chilled beverage with friends. This recipe of Barbecue Peanut Masala is vegan and gluten free and brings classic American flavor of sweet, spicy and slightly smoky barbecue sauce to traditional Indian spice and aromatic notes of onions, tomatoes, cilantro and lime juice flavored crunchy peanuts.
This recipe takes me back to days when me and Dr. A were still dating. We used to hit a restaurant called Colonel’s Cabin that was a small, cozy pub right on a super busy street in town. They had a shandy on their drinks menu which was considered a “ladies drink”. I would sometimes get that to sip on while Dr. A would enjoy his beer. And every time, without fail, we ordered a peanut masala to go with our drinks...ahh those were the days!!

Recipe Run Down
This is the simplest snack recipe that you can serve with a chilled beer and wait for the compliments to flow. In a deep mixing bowl, toss the Salted roasted peanuts with a sweet and smoky barbecue sauce of your choice. I used Kroger brand peanuts and their Simple Truth Barbecue sauce which comes from their line of organic products. Add chopped scallions, tomatoes, green chili, cilantro and lime juice. My suggestion would be to use a kind of tomato that does not have a lot of juice, for e.g. Romas.
Choose a green chili according to the spice level you like. Jalapenos are the mild ones. You can also choose to use serranos or thai chili peppers. Season with a little bit more salt and roasted cumin powder (read about it here). Give a taste check and make sure you have something to hold on to. You know, just in case you go weak in the knees…:P As you can see, Dr. A loved this new version of Peanut Masala.
