DIY Necklace Organizer by Ms. Little A

Hello friend! This was our first weekend after school started on Thursday. I swear I blinked and summer was over. Mr. Little V starts Kindergarten this year and Ms. Little A is a year closer to high and college. Gasp! This mama’s heart is beating a little but faster for the beginning of this school year. How do you tell your kids that growing up is overrated? Well, I guess you don’t because no one has ever been able to.

There is so much bad news going around past few weeks that it just makes you want to hold your kids in a tight embrace and never let go. But, again, for kids to learn about the “grown up” world, there are realities that they will eventually face. And as hard as it may be for them, they will have to wrap their heads around the crazy ways our world operates. As parents, we can give them hope and encourage them to always dream big. We can give them courage that their hearts, minds and body are stronger than they believe. We can give them trust to believe in themselves. We can give them grit to never give up and always try to make this world a better place – “for me and for you and the entire human race”.

DIY Necklace Organizer

Anyhow, what this has to this with today’s post, you ask? Nothing! Just some heart to heart with you. I was going to get to this: This DIY necklace organizer that Ms. Little A made me. This was something that I had requested her to make for me and she had promised that she will get to it over summer. I have a shelf inside my bathroom closet that holds most of my jewelry. The space is small and I have used clear organizers (like these) to sort my earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Watches go in a separate box (I have this one and love it). The problem is that the necklaces always get tangled and jumbled up and when I am in a rush to put on something before I am headed out the door, I can never get one out without a literal fight.

Ms. Little A assessed the situation and after some pinspiration, she got to work. Since the space is very small, she decided on using small circular cork trivets available at Ikea. Along with some scrap fabric that she had leftover from other projects and some hot glue gun magic, we had DIY necklace organizer in sight.

Cost

The only cost we incurred for this project was $4 for the cork trivets from Ikea. Rest of the supplies were already at home. Even if I include all the supplies, the project is safely under $10.

Supplies needed for DIY Necklace organizer

Cork board – use shape and size that works for you

Cotton fabric - coordinating colors always look pretty)

Hot glue gun and glue refills

Fancy thumb tacks

Paper clips

Instructions

Start by plugging in the hot glue gun. If you have never used it please have an adult close by.

Cut three pieces of fabric, an inch bigger than your cork board size on all sides. For e.g. if your cork board is a rectangle of 4 in by 6 in, your fabric should be 5 in by 7 in; for a circular cork board of radius 5 in (diameter 10 inch), the fabric should be 6 in radius (12 inch across). You get the idea – right?

Lay down the fabric on a flat surface/table right side facing down. So the wrong (or dull) side of the fabric should be facing towards you.

Lay the cork board in the center of your fabric. Carefully apply hot glue around the edges of the cork board and start gluing the fabric to the board.

Do small sections of the board at a time so that glue does not dry up before you stick the fabric.

Repeat with the other two cork boards.

Let dry.

Now take a paper clip and unfold it. Cut one small edge so that you have a “U” shaped wire. Stick this to the back of the cork board using hot glue so that you have a hook to hang the cork board.

Using two thumbtacks pin your DIY necklace organizer to the designated space. (see picture).

Use more thumb tacks to hang the necklaces on the board, spacing them according to length and weight of the necklaces.

That’s it! Simple, easy and elegant. SO easy that a 13 year old can do it in less than 30 minutes.
