This Easy apple crisp recipe with oatmeal topping is easy to make and is packed with apple flavor with a hint of citrus. A rustic dessert with sliced apples topped with a delicate brown sugar and butter oatmeal crumble.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F or 175 degrees C. Grease a 3 to 3.5 qt baking dish with butter.
Peel the apples and cut them into thick slices or wedges. Zest the orange and lime and then cut and juice them.
Add the apples to your greased baking dish. Add the zests, juices, cinnamon and nutmeg powders, and sugar to the sliced apples. Mix everything together gently using a rubber spatula.
In a separate mixing bowl combine the oatmeal topping ingredients.
Cut the butter into the topping ingredients using a pastry cutter, fork, or your clean hands until the mixture is crumbled.
Scatter the topping over the apple mixture.
Bake the apple crisp in a 350 degree oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream (optional).

I used a combination of fuji and gala apples. If you use a tart variety like granny smith, your apple crisp will need a little bit more sugar.Wash and zest the orange and lime before juicing them. You will have some juice leftover.Orange juice is the best surprise in this recipe, so I highly recommend not omitting it.Feel free to double the recipe of topping if you like more crisp to apples ratio.
